The 1/3 Profile in Human Design

In Human Design, Profile is the role we’re consistently evolving into to help fulfill our life’s purpose. Sometimes this role feels oh so natural, and other times we’re met with resistance when trying to live it out – either way, it is the flavor we inject into everything we do. There’s so much depth and pressure when contemplating those two words: Life Purpose – but gaining clarity around our Profile can begin to prompt the questions: what if our true purpose was to just experience life in the way we’re designed to experience it? To show up authentically in everything we do? And trust that doing so will guide us to where we need to be? Well…your Human Design Profile is the roadmap to get out of your head and into the flow of living.

In this post, we’re going to cover the 1/3 Profile: The Investigator Martyr. This Profile has the overall theme of Personal Destiny, which is a focus on self-exploration and working out the why and how in their own lives. As the Human Design Profile is made up of two numbers, let’s break them down one by one.

Human Design Profiles
Line 1 Summary (first number in profile: we’re more aware of these qualities in ourselves)

The Investigator

Those with a 1st line in their Profile are here to build a strong foundation of knowledge. Life is about research, study, and creating stability through understanding

• Keywords, Shadow + Gift:

  • Keywords: Introspective, Chameleon, Empathy
  • Shadow: Insecurity may bring about your desire to blend in and behave the same as others, causing you to push your true nature aside
  • Gift: When feeling secure in your knowledge, the possibilities for what you can imagine are endless. Relying on your Strategy & Authority will guide you to feeling like you’ve built a solid foundation in your pursuits in life

• Strengths of the 1st Profile Line:

  • Empathetic by nature, you have a strong ability to absorb information from others
  • You are a true investigator – you naturally study others’ actions to see what works, and what doesn’t
  • You instinctively gather knowledge and set the foundation for what others come to learn

• Challenges the 1st Line May Face:

  • Pureee relaxation may only come once you’ve established a secure foundation in your knowledge of something
  • Leaving things up in the air, or left to chance, can feel unsettling
  • You may feel a sense of insecurity without all the facts, and a desire to be introspective in your pursuit of knowledge

Human Design Profiles

Line 3 Summary (second number in profile: our unconscious qualities – might feel some resistance here)

The Martyr

The 3rd line is here to experiment and learn through trial and error. Life is about resilience, adaptability, and discovering wisdom through experience

• Keywords, Shadow + Gift:

  • Keywords: Trial and error, Mutation, Adaptation
  • Shadow: If you are not in line with your Strategy & Authority, you may begin to believe that your trial-and-error process is just one failure after the next
  • Gift: When aligned with your true self, you will perceive life as one big discovery process: welcoming change and adapting through the ups and downs

• Strengths of the 3rd Profile Line:

  • When feeling grounded in who you are, you have incredible resilience and tenacity while working through your discovery process
  • You have the potential to notice when something isn’t working before others do, because your mindset or approach takes a more explorative route
  • You tend to question everything and need to learn for yourself, as opposed to taking something at face value

• Challenges the 3rd Line May Face:

  • When completing a task or accomplishing a goal, it’s difficult for you to follow exactly what you hear from others – even if it’s sound advice and that approach worked well for them
  • Noticing what isn’t working (before others do) will likely prompt you to be the one to stand up and go against the norm, which can be met with resistance
  • Accomplishing a goal is a bit more time-consuming for you, as you need to first see what doesn’t work – this is the only way it will feel authentic for you

Putting it all together

1/3 Profile Life Themes:

  • Strong need to build a solid foundation of knowledge before acting
  • May unconsciously come up against trial-and-error experiences in your pursuit of knowledge
  • Natural ‘Do-it-yourselfer’ who learns by research/study and lived experience
  • Opportunities in life to grow your resilience and turn setbacks into growth

Tips for Thriving as a 1/3:

  • Create structured study time for topics that interest you
  • Reframe “failures” as simply data, not defeat
  • Share the lessons you learn! This empowers others to take action
  • Understand that “grey areas” drive you to seek answers
  • Trust that clarity comes from both research and lived trials
